It has taken almost two years, but the movement to make PARK(ing) Day an everyday occurrence has finally made some progress.

ANC 2F’s Community Development Committee voted last month to endorse putting a pilot parklet at 1333 14th Street NW, in front of the coffee shop Slipstream, ElevationDC reported. It would be D.C.’s first permanent parklet, or a parking spot transformed into a mini oasis for passersby to enjoy.

The concept is celebrated each fall on PARK(ing) Day when business, nonprofits, and other groups transform concrete spots into tiny parks. A group called ParkletDC formed on October 2013 to lobby for making them permanent fixtures, much like the beautiful and innovative mini parks that have come out of San Francisco’s Parks to Pavement program.

Under DDOT’s pilot program, groups can apply for a permit to put a public parklet in a metered on-street parking space for up to one year.
