It’s been a minute since we’ve heard any update from the Museum of Science Fiction—easily the D.C. area’s coolest/nerdiest museum, when it becomes a reality. Last we checked in with them, Museum Executive Director Greg Viggiano was still searching for a space for their preview museum.

Viggiano tells DCist that they’re still looking for a space and may have a big announcement about that in a couple weeks—along with news about a formal partnership with NASA and they’re very own convention—but first they’re raising money for their very first exhibit, at National Airport.

The Museum is looking to crowdfund $7,500 for the “Future of Travel” exhibition, which will be on display at DCA beginning on July 7. The four-month exhibition will feature a “large-scale Orion III spaceplane from 2001: A Space Odyssey, retro-futuristic travel posters by artist Steve Thomas, and a companion mobile app that will provide visitors with exhibit information, an interstellar passport, and their own ‘boarding pass to the future.'”

This isn’t the first crowdfunding effort the Museum of Science Fiction has launched. When they first announced their intentions to open a museum, they did so with an ambitious Indiegogo campaign to raise $160,000. They fell way short, only raising $56,000. This Kickstarter campaign, however is much less ambitious, and they already have $2,800 pledged at the time of writing. The money will go toward the “shipping, storage, and display” of the exhibition.
