Spoiler alert: it’s hot in D.C. today. How hot? At one point today, D.C. was the hottest city in the nation. No, seriously.
As Capital Weather Gang pointed out, Weather.com’s map of temperatures in the U.S. at noon today showed D.C. leading the pack at 89 degrees Fahrenheit—a full three degrees warmer than the second warmest city. It’s just after 4 p.m., and it’s still 89 degrees, though the temperature peaked into the 90s earlier today.
Recently, D.C.’s been on a bit of a hot streak. Last week, D.C. set a new record for the most consecutive 80-degree days in a row for early May. As CWG points out, today’s heat is consistent with the weather patterns we’ve been seeing lately:
Air this hot and this humid is certainly not common this early in the year, but seems to simply be an extension of the pattern which established itself at the beginning of May. The average temperature this month is running almost 8 degrees above average. From May 10-12, we tied (May 10 and 11) or broke (May 12) record high low temperatures daily.
Tomorrow is looking to be slightly less hot—with a high of 87 degrees—while the rest of the week should cool down a bit into the 70s, according to Weather.com.
