Gov. Terry McAuliffe signed a bill this afternoon that ends Virginia’s prohibition on vending on many state-maintained highways, which account for a significant amount of the prime spots for food trucks.

Until now, the mobile eateries were restricted to private property (and for a long time in Fairfax County, even doing that required more than $16,000 in fees). The result was squabbles that ended in police kicking the popular trucks off state-maintained highways.

Fairfax County Del. Eileen Filler-Corn introduced the legislation in the hopes of expanding job opportunities and creating new businesses. Vendors must still abide by the laws and restrictions of local municipalities.

The DMV Food Truck Association hailed the move as progress in a long-running battle to improve the climate in Virginia for food trucks.
