Now in its fourth year, D.C.’s Flag Day Festival is slated to take place on June 14 at 4 p.m. in Dupont Circle.

The event gathers those inked with their city pride as well as people willing to wave a flag or don temporary tattoos in the name of D.C.’s longstanding demand for self autonomy.

This year’s celebration comes amid some markers of progress, including marijuana legalization and the District’s tentative victory in court yesterday for budget autonomy.

“We want to cover Dupont with flags,” says organizer Omeed Tabiei, with the newly formed group behind the event (it was sponsored in previous years by L.U.V. DC and Let Us Vote D.C.). They are also hoping to get a resolution introduced and passed by the D.C. Council making Flag Day an official city holiday.

Although the full line-up has yet to be announced, organizers say that the annual “In The Flesh” event, where people show off their flag tattoos, will take place on June 13. There will also be a liberty pole—a tall, wooden beam topped by a Phrygian cap—in their midst.

After planting one across the street from the U.S. Capitol for several days last month, DCMJ’s Adam Eidinger promised that it was just the first pole of many to come. “During the Revolutionary War, colonists wore Phrygian caps and built liberty poles as acts of defiance against the British government’s unethical taxation of colonies without representation,” he explained.

DCMJ plans to hoist one in Dupont, ahead of the Flag Day Festival, and hold a three-day vigil at the site beginning on June 12. This time, though, they are seeking permission from the authorities ahead of time, Tabiei said.
