A Congressional intern learned the hard way today that no, you cannot bring a handgun into a House office building.

The Post reports that Joshua Wheeler, a 25-year-old intern for Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) was arrested this morning when he tried to go into the Longworth House Office Building with an unloaded handgun. Wheeler is being charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm.

Wheeler has since been put on temporary leave and a spokesman for Jenkins says that they are “cooperating with Capitol police” and said that their “current understanding is that this was an accident.”

There’s a lesson here, Congressional interns: leave your firearms at home.
