Moving on is a tough gig. Despite its positive implications, it still means something—or someone—gets left behind. We felt this way for local power-pop band Typefighter, who announced a few weeks ago that they would play their last show in July. We also feel this way for David Combs when he announced in February that he would be “putting a cap on” his solo project known as Spoonboy. Somehow, we survived the ensuing months as Combs finished up his last tours. But the time has come for the final Spoonboy show—tomorrow night at the Black Cat.

Because Combs isn’t a heartless monster, he happily continued to indulge fans with a few last Spoonboy tunes—”Linus and Me” and “Dr. Irving Kirsch” are some of Combs’ strongest songwriting yet. And today on DCist, with heavy hearts, we premiere the very last Spoonboy song.

Listen below to “One Handed,” previously released on a demo tape in 2012.

After simmering for a few years, this new rendition—backed by a full band—lives and breathes earnest humanity; “I’m obsessed and so aware of it / fixated on things that i can’t have / but jealousy is a boring, boring game / and I do much better with crazy, crazy, crazy.” “One Handed” follows a struggle that is wholly invisible, but all-encompassing: balancing what you are with what you want to be.

The heart of the song beats in its final third part, where the narrator lists intentions, some positive, some negative, but all so solidly understandable. “I wanna be your cast iron obligation,” Combs sings. But his subject also wants to be a “court ordered sense of failure” and “half-real, half-make believe.” We’re unsure of what that means but we totally want it anyway.

And so is the way with Combs’ writing: incapable of speaking dishonestly, but so excited by that release that sometimes the truth comes out at an angle. You have to bend your neck to get it, but it’s okay because you so desperately want to be part of Spoonboy’s world. And as he departs, Spoonboy takes us with him.

Spoonboy plays tomorrow night at the Black Cat with Nana Grizol and Art Sorority for Girls.
