A snowfall in D.C. next winter won’t be the same: Bill Howland, the head of of the Department of Public Works—the agency charged with snow response in the District—has resigned.
Loose Lips reports that Howland announced his resignation from the job he’s held for the past 11 years at a Council meeting earlier today. 11 years is a long time for a city department head to hold a position, especially considering the change in leadership Howland has seen during his time on the job.
Howland was first appointed to the job in 2004 by then-mayor Anthony Williams and held on to it through the Fenty and Gray administrations. But Howland’s recent resignation isn’t politically motivated he says. He told LL that it was “time to go” after more than a decade on the job and said his resignation doesn’t have anything to do with Mayor Muriel Bowser.
In addition to helming the District’s snow response—something that most Washingtonians love to freak out about—Howland has led the agency responsible for alley cleaning, vehicle booting and towing, and trash collection (who can forget the Great Trash Can Replacement Debacle of 2014?).
