It is foul out, with the forecast only calling for a moderate improvement tomorrow. All the more reason to stuff yourself with sugar and fried dough tomorrow.
It is the first Friday in June, which means it is also National Donut Day (a holiday created by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to remember the volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I).
A free doughnut of your choice can be had at Krispy Kreme, no strings attached. Or if Dunkin’ Donuts is more your thing, they’re giving them out for free with the purchase of a beverage. And Alexandria’s Sugar Shack Doughnuts promise free doughnuts for anyone who brings in a friend and says ” #Donuts4Good” (no, I don’t know if you actually have to say the hashtag bit).
Meanwhile at District Doughnut in Barracks Row, you can acquire a vanilla bean glazed doughnut for $1, which will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund for injured U.S. Armed Forces members. Or you can order a box of four doughnuts (supply is limited) for $5 through a promotion with Postmates. And Astro Doughtnuts & Fried Chicken promises that all proceeds from a special doughnut (strawberry glaze, with blueberry drizzle and lemon buttercream) will go to the Fisher House Foundation.
If you need additional guidance, here are the 11 doughnuts in the D.C. area that make us happiest.
