The 7000-series cars made their Red Line debut this morning, leaving Shady Grove at 7:01 a.m.

Metro’s first 7000-series train began running on the Blue Line back in April. They are equipped with event recorders, digital video surveillance systems, and features that help keep cars upright and in-line in a collision. The cars also feature nonslip flooring instead of carpet, padded blue seats replace the orange vinyl, and LED screens show route information.

Metro employees celebrated the Red Line debut with the customary swag, including 7000-series commemorative pins.

Metro has ordered 528 of the cars, with the intent of replacing the entire 1000-series, which have been in service since the system’s opening in 1976.
