MONDAY

Malportado Kids @ Union Arts. 8 p.m. Accessibility unknown.

Malportado Kids are playing tonight at Studio 69, the basement space at Union Arts. They just released a bombastic new LP, Total Cultura, aimed squarely at those who love to both dance their asses off and question the merits of patriarchal power structures. It’s a legit banger. Go to the show. Dance. Sweat. And maybe, if you have a second right now, consider for a moment who controls discourse in America, and why. — Ron Knox

DC9: White Lung, Obliterations, and Big Mouth. 8:30 p.m., $12. All ages, inaccessible space.

TUESDAY

Florence + the Machine and Empress Of @ Merriweather Post Pavilion. 8 p.m., $45-$65. Accessible venue, all ages.

Florence + The Machine’s latest album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, was released just last week in advance of a summer and fall tour. The recording further builds on the ensemble’s signature sound, which centers around singer Florence Welch’s powerful and layered vocals over driving rhythms. Though there’s nothing all that innovative on How Big, the music’s Enya-meets-U2 quality continues to serve the group well, and sounds great coming out of cranked up speakers. The songs should translate well to the live setting of Merriweather Post Pavilion, where the band will play Tuesday night along with Empress Of. — Sriram Gopal

Comet Ping Pong: Wildhoney, the Spook School, Mercury Girls, and Expert Alterations. 9 p.m., $12. All ages, accessible space.

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, The Creepers, Romantic States @ Black Cat Backstage 7:30 p.m., $12. All ages, accessible space.

Ready for a unique experience? There’s nothing quite like seeing Ed Schrader’s Music Beat live, one of the most original and compelling musical projects to come out of Baltimore in a long time. There’s just a single drum and an electric bass to support Shrader’s otherworldly, powerful voice that sometimes sweetly croons and sometimes sounds straight out of your nightmares. The energy never lets up, and Schrader will have you laughing in between songs. Openers The Creepers and fellow Baltimore band Romantic States both make minimalist music that fit quite well with the headliners’ aesthetic. Make sure to get there early for this one. — Alex Tebeleff
