As many as 200 car2go vehicles are coming to the mean streets of Arlington soon.

The county board unanimously approved a yearlong demonstration study to test the carsharing system on Tuesday. The company has long lobbied for an expansion to Arlington, even imploring users at one point to flood the county with requests to approve the move.

Under the terms of the agreement with the company, car2go would move any cars that have stayed in one place for 24 hours in areas zoned for residential permit parking and 36 hours elsewhere.

“Given the high percentage of workers who commute on transit and the increasing number of Arlington’s corridor residents who opt to live car free, expanded use of carsharing has the potential to add flexibility and reduce vehicle trips and associated parking demand, while increasing quality of life for all,” Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hynes said in a release.
