In today’s sign of the apocalypse, a D.C. agency is on track to complete a transportation project ahead of schedule.
The District Department of Transportation has been working to replace the 16th Street Bridge, which spans Military Road, in several stages since last October. The final—and most impactful—of the four phases began at the end of March, resulting in lane closures and several weekends where Military Road was completely closed.
In addition to causing headaches, detours, and delays for drivers, the work has affected several bus lanes. Construction was slated to be completed in the middle of July, but DDOT announced today that they will push up the schedule by two weeks.
That means that a large part of 16th Street NW will be fully closed this weekend. The first closure will run from Friday at 10 p.m. through Saturday at 10 p.m. and the second will be in effect from Sunday at 5 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m.
The planned detours are:
For northbound traffic on 16th Street: Turn right onto Missouri Avenue eastbound, take the ramp onto 14th Street northbound; turn left on Aspen Street westbound; and turn right back onto 16th Street northbound.
For southbound traffic on 16th Street: Turn left onto Fort Stevens Drive eastbound; turn right onto 14th Street southbound; turn left onto Colorado Avenue westbound; and turn left back onto 16th Street southbound.
After that, though, they’ll be about done. The bridge will fully reopen on July 1—just in time for Fourth of July traffic and two weeks ahead of schedule.
Now retreat to your bunker, end times are near.
