A nine-year-old boy from Hagerstown, Md. who was severely beaten by his mother’s boyfriend for eating a piece of birthday cake without permission has died.
On Tuesday, June 30th at about 10:37 p.m., Hagerstown police responded to reports of “serious physical assault of a juvenile make” at an apartment on Lynnehaven Drive in Hagerstown. When authorities arrived, they found an unconscious, unresponsive juvenile who was not breathing. Police say that the nine-year-old boy had “numerous bruises, contusions, and abrasions” on his face, neck, back, buttocks, legs, and abdomen. He was transported to Children’s National Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The Post reports that the boy died from his injuries yesterday.
While investigating the incident, police learned that the boy had been handcuffed and severely beaten by his mother’s boyfriend, 30-year-old Robert Leroy Wilson because the boy ate a piece of birthday cake without permission. Additionally, police learned that four hours earlier, another adult male, the boy’s uncle, was present and had called 911 for assistance, but paramedics were met by the boy’s mother outside who told them the boy was just “congested” and didn’t need medical attention.
Wilson was originally charged with first and second degree assault, child abuse, and reckless endangerment, but more charges are likely coming after an autopsy is conducted.
