Right now, the temperature is 86 degrees, but with the heat index, it feels more like 92 degrees. It’s expected to get hotter today—up to the low 90s, with a heat index in the mid-to-upper 90s—which means D.C. has activated its heat emergency plan.

When a heat emergency is activated, D.C. residents are encourage to keep cool, by staying inside, in air conditioning, or in shade, and be drinking plenty of water. Of course, if you see someone in need of shelter to cool off, you should call (800) 535-7252 to report them so they can be taken to one of the District’s seven emergency cooling facilities for homeless residents, or ten cooling centers for senior citizens.
