Photo credit: West End CinemaCinephiles across the District bemoaned the closing of West End Cinema in March. The beloved, scrappy art house theater wasn’t longed for this world, it seemed. But lo and behold, months after closing its doors, West End Cinema is coming back, this time as a part of the Landmark Theatres chain.
Yesterday, Landmark announced that they’ve taken over West End Cinema, situated on M Street NW between 23rd and 24th Streets, on Friday, July 17th. For now, the new West End will be same as the old one, but expect some upgrades in the near future: Landmark says they will add new seating, larger screens, and new concession options, with more food and alcoholic beverages.
As for the programming, Landmark President Ted Mundorff says that the new location will allow the independent theater chain to “bring even more films and events to the Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and Georgetown neighborhoods.”
DCist reached out to see if previous West End Cinema owner Josh Levin would be involved in the programming or operations of the theater under Landmark’s ownership, but haven’t heard back.
Landmark is still planning on opening a fourth D.C.-area location (they already have E Street Cinema and Bethesda Row Cinema), Atlantic Plumbing Cinema, to the U Street corridor in October.
