Pop’s reigning high priestess is in town for a two-night engagement at National Park, and it seems like a fair portion of the city is as giddy as a middle-schooler about it.
But federal Washington doesn’t just put on glitter and proceed to shake it off with Taylor Swift herself. Federal Washington gets T-Swift madness in other ways.
At least 26 members of Congress and political action committees are planning to use the two shows as the setting for fundraisers, CNN reported. Benefactors will pay $750 to $2,500 to sing along with their favorite politicians (evidently Swift’s Congressional superfans lean right; 18 of the 26 are Republican.)
Still, it is a Democrat from Virginia who has earned the title of Congress’s biggest Taylor Swift fan, at least according to the National Journal. “We basically raised our kids on Taylor Swift songs,” Rep. Don Beyer said. And he has well-documented proof of their efforts: his 23-year-old daughter, Clara Beyer, runs the FeministTaylorSwift Twitter account.

“If you’ve ever been criticized and hated it … she has a lot of different songs over the years that almost anyone can relate to as, ‘Hey, I can remember that phase of my life,'” Rep. Beyer told the Journal, with a reference to “Mean” from her 2010 album Speak Now.
It isn’t just the people at the top under the Taylor’s spell, though. A gaggle of interns for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen recently made a tribute video to the boss set to “Shake it Off.” See for yourself.
And our hometown newspaper couldn’t resist getting in on the action, either. The Washington Post’s Reliable Source scouts Tay’s possible Instagram photo shoot locations (yep, really).
Perhaps she might visit the Eleanor Roosevelt statue at the FDR memorial (“If Eleanor were still alive, Taylor would totally be part of her squad”) or maybe she’ll go snuggle some kittens at the cat cafe (“By this point in her tour, outspoken cat lady Tay has to be suffering from kitty withdrawal.”)
Who knows? But you might just find some Congressman holding a fundraiser there in the hopes that Taylor shows up, too.
