The D.C. State Fair (yes, D.C. has had an annual state fair for the past few years) is adding a furry new attraction this year: a pet parade.

Costumed (and unadorned) pet owners will march with their charges from the Shaw Dog Park (at 11th and R streets NW), up a few blocks and around the corner to the site of the fair itself, Old City Farm and Guild (925 Rhode Island Avenue NW), on September 12.

And organizers aren’t limiting the fun to dogs; people to bring are encouraged to bring friendly pets on leashes, in cages, tanks, or aquariums, too. They also promise an unnamed “celebrity” pet as the Marshall.

Costumes aren’t required, but they are encouraged, and they might help you win a prize. Register (for free) online, or at the starting line on the day of the event.

For the non-pet owners, the Washington Humane Society will have adoptable animals on hand. And there are always the wide variety of other contests to take part in—among them, competitions for homebrews, pies, honey, pickles, and funky vegetables.
