Today in surprisingly interesting time-wasting activities: finding out the “food capitals” of the world.
Yes, this interactive map is based only on data from Instagram. And, of course, big cities like New York and London dominate a lot of the categories by sheer virtue of the number of Instagram wielding-residents they have. But UK-based Photoworld also digs beyond pizza and burgers to finds out where other food items are most photographed.
Pierogis, unsurprisingly, are popular subjects for Instagram photos in Poland—but they also register in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Meanwhile, 15 percent of macaron-tagged photos originate in Bangkok and Seoul. Pretty much the only people who glamorize currywurst are Germans.
As for the District, we only crack the top five cities for banh mi—we’re responsible for 4.2 percent of the world’s Instagram photos of the Vietnamese sandwich.

Some exploration of the map also shows that Washingtonians take 5.8 percent of the world’s jerk chicken photographs as well as 1.7 percent and 1.5 percent of Instagram’s burrito and bacon shots, respectively. Now you know.
