The D.C. State Fair is really raising the bar for buzzed about events this year.
First, they introduced a new pet parade sure to induce a lot of awws as costumed critters walk around the block to the fair grounds. But if cuteness doesn’t do it for you, perhaps competitive marijuana growing will.
Organizers announced a “best bud” contest to the fair’s litany of other agricultural, craft, and prepared foods competitions (among them: heaviest fruit, knit and crochet, and pickled foods). The cannabis plants—legal under D.C. law since February— will be judged on four categories:
1. Appearance: Is it well manicured? Does it have Trichomes (sparkling crystals)?
2. Odor: What does it smell like? Does it have a sweet, spicy, or murky smell?
3. Touch: Is it sticky? Does the stem snap or bend?
4.Your Story: Did you grow your plant organically? Did you use artificial light, natural light, or a combination? Was the plant grown hydroponically or in soil? All of this information and anything else you would like the judges to know should be included in the Your Story category below in the registration from.
As many as 50 participants can take part, but they must have grown the green from scratch. And they have to be prepared to hand over a picture of themselves with their plants.
Meanwhile, the fair will also feature a new compost contest, set to be judged based on composition, consistency, bouquet, garden-appeal, and the story behind it.
The D.C. State Fair is slated to take place on September 12 on the grounds of Old City Farm & Guild (925 Rhode Island Avenue NW)
