Northern Virginia dog owners, beware: a dog in Fairfax County may have been attacked by a bear, a local veterinarian suspects.

The Fairfax County Police Department says that, on July 21, a dog was attacked and wounded in the 100 block of River Park lane and after being treated by a veterinarian, the suspected culprit was a bear. The dog’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

“Without a witness, it is hard to say exactly what happened to cause the dog’s injury, but in an abundance of caution, animal control and wildlife management personnel remind residents to keep their pets contained to their property and monitor their time outdoors,” Katherine Edwards, Ph.D., Certified Wildlife Biologist for Fairfax County, said in a statement.

Though bears in that area are rare, their presence is not unheard of. Last year, a black bear was struck by a vehicle on the Dulles Toll Road in Virginia, while another one was spotted nearby around the same time. And in recent years, black bears have been spotted hanging out in Northwest D.C. and in Bethesda, Md.

Fairfax County Police are setting up trail cameras in the wooded areas near where the dog was attacked and it’ll be monitored “for any unusual wildlife activity taking place in the area.”
