Jack Rose Dining Saloon (2007 18th Street NW) has reopened its rooftop tiki bar for the summer. The small open-air space will open Thursdays through Saturday evenings. DCist was recently invited to stop by to sample this year’s menu of tropical cocktails and island-inspired snacks.

The concise cocktail list includes both traditional and new recipes by beverage director Trevor Frye. Consider starting off with the classic Ti’ Punch, a refreshing blend of rhum agricole, lime, syrup, bitters and cinnamon. If that drink doesn’t do enough to make you feel like you’re on vacation, go with the Bahia. The frothy mix of white rum, coconut cream and pineapple resembles a Pina Colada in look and taste.

The World’s Collide is one of the more interesting options—a combination of gin, aquavit, Sam Adam’s Twisted Tea and citrus. There’s also the Palm Pine, which uses jalapeño-infused Jameson Black Barrel along with pineapple, banana, and ginger beer. It scores points for creativity but is arguably the weakest of the bunch. In addition, you can also order a large-format Scorpion Bowl and take advantage of the rest of the bar inventory.

Cocktails are $13 each and half-off during the Thursday tiki happy hour, which runs from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Beer drinkers will enjoy the rotating selection of summer brews, which are available for $6 each and $5 during happy hour.

The special food menu is just as enticing, and you’ll definitely want some snacks to complement all the drinking. The grilled whiskey wings ($11) are the star here. They are plump and sweet with a nice char on them. The shrimp and flank steak tacos ($13) overflow with filling and could easily make a meal.

The tiki bar is open Thursdays from 5 p.m. to close, and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to close. To access the bar, head upstairs and to the far end of the main terrace.
