After a failed attempt to bring Capital Bikeshare to College Park, the city is getting its own bikesharing system.
Officials from the city and University of Maryland were working out a deal with Capital Bikeshare last year when the company that provides their equipment went out business, stalling the system’s expansion. Although Capital Bikeshare recently said that, after two years, it is back to acquiring new bikes and docking stations, College Park has already decided to go another way.
The city and the new company, which has not yet been announced, are working out the details for a system that would have at least 10 kiosks and 100 bikes, The Washington Post reported.
In College Park, officials say they had to move on from the failed attempt to become the fifth jurisdiction member of Capital Bikeshare to secure funds for the program. The city and the university received a state grant of $374,980 to help cover costs to start the program, and they had a pressing deadline attached to them.
“For a while we were hoping to find a resolution but then it got complicated because of our grant restriction and ultimately we couldn’t move forward with Capital Bikeshare and had to start over,” said [Terry Schum, the city’s director of planning, community and economic development].
Officials are committed to making sure the system is integrated with the city’s other transportation options, including the forthcoming Purple Line. They also said plan to look for ways to integrate with Capital Bikeshare, though it isn’t clear how that would work.
