Today in sad dog news: two Petco employees in Chesterfield, Va. were charged today for animal neglect after a dog was found dead in one of the store’s drying cages in May.
According to WWBT, Alison Marks dropped off her two-year-old golden retriever, Colby, in May to the Petco store only to find her dog dead in a drying cage when she came to pick him up later.
The two employees responsible for Colby at the time, Suzanne C. Jensen and Rebecca L. Witherspoon, are now facing a class 4 misdemeanor charge of animal neglect. They have both since been terminated by Petco.
At the time, Marks was told by a vet that the dog died of heat stroke. However, after Petco’s investigation, it was determined that the type of dryer used on the dog “did not have heat or hot air.” Petco didn’t disclose any specifics as to what happened, but said that “our animal care protocols were not followed.”
Since the incident, Petco said they’ve removed the type of kennel dryer the dog was kept in in all Petco stores and is also giving “addition training sessions” at all of its grooming salons.
