A 90-year-old water main broke Wednesday morning in Silver Spring, causing some dramatic flooding on Piney Branch Road near the intersection of Flower Avenue.
Water has been shut off to the area, which is closed to traffic. Firefighters are checking the extent of the flooding and looking for other hazards, while crews from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission are working on fixing the 12-inch water main, officials said. The muddy waters flooded several businesses.
Several hours earlier, another broken water main broke on the East-West Highway in Prince George’s County. Both of the incidents are a “classic sign of aging infrastructure,” the WSSC said.
