Car2go is finally making a long-anticipated foray into Arlington.

They’ll be putting 200 of the blue-and-white vehicles in an area of about 22 square miles starting on September 19.

Of car2go’s 48,000 members in the D.C. area, more than 1,000 already live in Arlington, and the company has been lobbying for years to expand there, even imploring users at one point to flood the county with requests to approve the move. The county board unanimously approved a year-long demonstration study to test the system in June.

Arlington members can park at any city metered space, or on any residential neighborhood street within the “home area.” But because of D.C. regulations, the cars must be dropped off in the same jurisdiction where they began, car2go spokesman Brad Ducey said. So if a user picks up a car in Arlington, they can drive it into the District, but they can’t leave it there; the rental must be ended in Arlington.

“It’s always been our goal to bring cross-jurisdictional access to seamlessly travel between the two,” Ducey said. “So that’s something we’ll continue to work toward.”

The fleet will look the same as the cars in D.C., but the insides have been upgraded with cell phone chargers, Bluetooth connectivity, and an updated GPS system. They are also doing away with member cards, so Arlington drivers will use the car2go app for every aspect of the rental.
