Amid a spike in violent crime, members of the D.C. Police Union who voted in a recent poll overwhelmingly said they had ‘no confidence’ in Police Chief Cathy Lanier.
Less than a third of the union’s 3,600 members responded to the survey, which asked: “Do you have confidence that Chief Cathy Lanier is able to properly manage the resources of the Metropolitan Police Department and keep the citizens safe?” But more than 97 percent of the 1,150 officers that responded said ‘no.’
“The men and women in the union no longer have confidence in her leadership because we don’t trust her to tell the truth to the public about what’s going on,” Union Chairman Delroy Burton said on FOX5, citing the chief’s account of vice units’ productivity. “This [vote] means the mayor has to do some thinking about the police chief.”
In a statement, the union said the vote is a “symbolic gesture of our member‘s long-building desire for a new direction in policing in the District.”
But Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her unwavering support for the chief in a statement:
“After 25 years of policing DC streets, deploying officers and strategies, and building a force of highly qualified officers and leaders, in the good times and the tough times, too, I have every confidence in Chief Lanier.”
