After nearly 50 years of business, local outdoor recreation chain Hudson Trail Outfitters announced it’s going out of business.

In a statement, Hudson Trail Outfitters CEO Sandy Cohan said that the company will be closing its four remaining stores (in Fairfax, Rockville, Tenleytown, and Pentagon City) and closing up shop for good. The reason? It can’t keep up with competitors and the changing times.

“The retail landscape has changed so much within the last 36 months and the Company has decided that the time has come to begin to ‘wind down’ all company affairs, knowing that it never had to compromise any excellence standards on behalf of the community,” Cohan says.

Since 1971, Hudson Trail Outfitters has been a local institution, selling outdoor gear and apparel throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area. It’s biggest competitor, REI, has numerous locations in the D.C. area and will finally be opening up its first store in D.C. proper, in NoMa’s Uline building.

Cohan did not say when the four remaining Hudson Trail Outfitters stores would close. We’ll update when we find out.
