Although summer certainly hasn’t quit us, most of the city’s public outdoor pools were closed for the season by Sunday. But the overheated masses haven’t been left entirely high and dry. Here are your remaining public options to cool off.
Splash in the still-open pools: Banneker (2500 Georgia Avenue NW), Francis (2435 N Street NW), Upshur (4300 Arkansas Avenue NW), Rosedale (1701 Gales Street NE), and Oxon Run (501 Mississippi Avenue SE) are all open through Monday, September 7. And East Potomac (972 Ohio Drive SW) will be available to swimmers through September 30.
Run through a giant outdoor fountain: The city’s 19 spray parks are staying open through Labor Day.
Let the dogs have their day: The Department of Public Recreation is hosting the 7th annual Doggie Day Swim—where the District’s canines are allowed to frolic in several public pools at the end of the season—on September 12, from 12 to 4 p.m.
Take your licensed pet to Upshur Pool, Francis Pool, or Randall Pool (South Capitol and I Streets SW) and let them swim free (the D.C. Department of Health will also issue licenses on site, but owners have to bring the required paperwork and payment.) Alexandria is hosting the same event; small dogs can visit the Memorial Pool (901 Wythe Street) on September 13 and dogs over 25 pounds get their turn on September 19 at the Old Town Pool (1609 Cameron Street.)
Take a late(r) night dip: DPR is hosting a summer night pool party at Banneker on September 5th. The free event runs from 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
