In what’s truly a bizarre display of botched PR handling, the Washington football team is under fire after the wife of General Manager Scot McCloughan, Jessica, allegedly tweeted something vulgar to an ESPN reporter.

After ESPN reporter Dianna Russini broke news that Kirk Cousins would be replacing Robert Griffin III as the team’s starting quarterback, McCloughan tweeted something vulgar to Russini. The bizarre part is how the team reacted: first, they claimed the tweet was from a fake account, only to, hours later, backpedal on that claim, apologizing for McCloughan’s tweet. McCloughan’s account has since been suspended.

Here’s the statement McCloughan sent to ESPN:

“I deeply apologize for the disparaging remarks about an ESPN reporter on my personal Twitter account. The comment was unfounded and inappropriate, and I have the utmost respect for both the reporter and ESPN. I regret that my actions have brought undeserved negative attention to the Redskins organization and its leadership. My comments in no way reflect the opinions or attitudes of the organization and I regret that my behavior has in any way negatively impacted the team and its loyal fan base.”

Anyway, the new season is already off to a great start, on and off the field!
