Beginning October 1st, D.C. will begin extending parking meter hours in some of the city’s busiest neighborhoods.

Whereas people parking in some D.C. neighborhoods have to feed the meter until at least 10 p.m., the budget the D.C. Council passed in May extends enforcement hours until midnight. According to the District Department of Transportation, the neighborhoods affected include Adams Morgan, Georgetown’s historic district, Penn Quarter, Chinatown, U Street Corridor, National Mall, Van Ness/Tenleytown/Friendship Heights area (Wisconsin Avenue from Van Ness Street to Western Avenue), Downtown, and Southwest Waterfront.

Under the budget the Council passed, parking tickets for expired meters increased from $25 to $30, while the penalty for drivers who park over their time limit in residential zones bumped from $30 to $35.

You’ve got a month to prepare, D.C. You’ve been warned.
