Are you as intrigued by local politics as you are in discussing the ever-expanding development of D.C.? Do you pine to write about issues facing the District like affordable housing, homelessness, crime, and transportation? Do you also have feelings about the weather, pandas, and the daily happenings of our city? Well, check it out: DCist is looking for two new staffers.
Both are full-time positions, with fully covered medical, dental and vision benefits, at our office in Shaw. Days and hours may vary from a 9-to-5 job. The ideal candidate for each position should be as comfortable with writing aggregated blog posts from multiple news sources as he, she, or they is adept at covering breaking news, digging up untold tales, and writing stories assigned by an editor. They will both have sharp news instincts and a lively voice.
Associate Editor
The Associate Editor has the skills and flexibility to write quick stories, report out original features, handle social media, and edit others’ work. You should be as comfortable reporting—pestering public officials, tracking down sources—as you are musing about which Congressman is trying to mess with D.C. laws this week and opining about Metro’s latest woes.
Requirements: At least two years of full-time blogging experience; an instinct for what’s newsworthy and the skills to report it out; razor sharp copy editing skills; a ferocious drive and piercing wit; a deep and abiding interest in Washington, D.C.; and the stamina to create 4-6 posts per day while helping to manage the flow of pieces from other contributors.
Staff Writer
The Staff Writer is a clean, engaging writer who can find stories, aggregate, report on breaking news with aplomb. Other responsibilities will include fact-checking, contributing research, helping to execute recurring features, and occasionally editorializing on subjects of local interest.
Requirements: At least one year of full-time blogging or equivalent experience, an instinct for what’s newsworthy and the skills to report it out, a ferocious drive and piercing wit, and the stamina to create at least six well-written posts per day. Though you ideally already possess a working knowledge about the District, the right candidate has the versatility and tenacity to become an authoritative local news source.
If you’re interested in either position, send a brief email with a summary of your experience and writing clips to jobs@dcist.com, specify “DCist Staff Writer” or “DCist Associate Editor” in the subject line so we know which position you’re applying for. No need to follow up: if we’re interested, you’ll hear from us. No attachments, please.
