Amid a crackdown on synthetic marijuana, D.C. Police have closed a Southeast store and arrested two people for distributing the substances.
Smiley Mart, located in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr, Avenue SE, has been issued a notice to cease all business operations. Police also charged Dagem Gessesse, 32, of Springfield, and Sinafeke Ensuneh, 40, of Silver Spring, with distribution of synthetic cannabinoids.
Despite the name, synthetic marijuana actually has very little in common with the real deal. Manufacturers engineer a chemical structure meant to be like THC, the active chemical cannabinoid in marijuana, but the effects are far more dramatic and wide-ranging. Most dangerous, experts say, is the fact that there is no standardization, so the substances vary wildly—resulting in behavior that is often erratic or violent.
With overdoses on the rise, the city has announced aggressive measures to combat the problem. They include legislation that increases penalties for selling the substances and stepped up enforcement.
Earlier this summer, authorities closed a Bloomingdale store and they’ve gone after several stores in Petworth.
Police said that community tips led to the arrests and the closure of Smiley Mart. They currently offer a reward of up to $1,000 for information relating to the crime.
