Looking for an affordable home in D.C. is hard enough—even the city has gotten into the house flipping business—without having to navigate potential scams in the process. Tonight, staff from Attorney General Karl Racine’s office will lead a conversation, along with representatives from other District and federal government agencies, to school current and potential homeowners on housing pitfalls.

Things to look out for include: construction violations, fraudulent contractors and house-flippers, foreclosure scams, mortgage regulations… and more!

According to a release, the forum stems from an incident in May when the Office of the Attorney General filed a consumer protection lawsuit against a Virginia couple who allegedly violated District law by selling improperly and unlawfully renovated homes. Their actions left home buyers with tens of thousands of dollars in home repairs and potential losses in home values.

For more house horror stories, WUMU spoke to scores of victims in its Flipped Off series about developers and contractors who cut corners in D.C.’s competitive real estate market.

Tonight’s forum will take place at the Benning/Dorothy L. Height Neighborhood Library at 6:30 p.m.
