More than a year after he was ousted as the Democratic nominee for mayor, Vincent Gray is considering getting back in the political fray.

Four anonymous associates told The Washington Post that Gray is giving serious consideration to mounting a bid for either Vincent Orange’s At-Large Council seat or Yvette Alexander’s Ward 7 spot next year. From the Post:

A onetime member of Gray’s cabinet, who has been in his presence at public events, said the former mayor has appeared to grow more interested in seeking public office as the months have passed and as people have encouraged him to run.

“At first he was non-responsive,” the former aide said. “And then he started saying he would consider it. It wasn’t like he was being polite. If he wasn’t going to do it, he’d tell you. He’s pretty direct that way.”

While a number of other associates have pleaded guilty to campaign-related felonies and are awaiting sentencing, Gray has been under investigation for 1,671 days without charges, according to Loose Lip’s handy Vince Gray Investigation Clock .

As The Post’s Colby King put it: “District voters are no longer sitting on pins and needles waiting for the outcome. For many, Gray is out of sight and, hence, out of mind. And they consider [Jeffrey] Thompson and the others to be yesterday’s news.”

But a new run might give voters a chance to reconsider and give Gray supporters who jumped ship another chance to get back on board.

“I don’t want to jump out there and then I’m disappointed because the U.S. attorney drops a bombshell,” Ward 7 activist and former Gray supporter Barbara Savage explained to The Post about why she didn’t vote for Gray in the 2014 Democratic primary. The primary election occurred three weeks after the U.S. Attorney’s Office implicated the then-mayor in a 2010 “shadow campaign,” and it was widely believed that charges would be forthcoming. Now, Savage says: “I don’t think they have anything. I don’t think it’s fair to him. I don’t think it’s fair to people like myself.”

The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 14, 2016. We could be seeing more of this soon.
