The news that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy abruptly pulled out of the race to replace John Boehner caused no small degree of panic and pandemonium on the Hill today.

Rep. Peter King tells me that members are crying in cloakroom, unable to handle the unrest and confusion. “A banana republic,” he says.
