It doesn’t matter if it is a drunken flight, incursion over the White House fence, or just a regular joy ride, drone flying of any kind is forbidden over airspace in D.C. and national parks. But the memo has not been widely distributed among drone enthusiasts, apparently.
In the latest case, the United State Park Police issued Howard Solomon III a citation and confiscated his equipment after the Secret Service spotted a drone flying around the Washington Monument at 1:20 a.m. this morning. Solomon apparently last control of his F182 6 Axis Quadcopter, which was later located on the Ellipse at 16th St. and Constitution Ave.
It was the ninth recorded incident this year of an illegal drone flight in a Washington-area national park in 2015—and the 26th time since 2013.
The FAA launched its “No Drone Zone” awareness effort on May 15 to “reinforce the message that the District of Columbia and cities and towns within a 15-mile radius of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport are a No Drone Zone.”
On May 16, a man was arrested for trying to fly a drone over the White House fence.
