Dish of the week: Chicken (or turkey) pot pie
Where to find it: Boss Shepherd’s, Dangerously Delicious Pies, Olivia’s Diner
This crisp autumn weather calls for warm comfort food, and the heartier the better. If you’re throwing calorie counts by the wayside, why not dig into a slice of creamy and savory chicken pot pie. The flaky, buttery crust and mix of chicken, gravy and vegetables is so simple, but oh so indulgent.
For a classic take on chicken pie, stop by Dangerously Delicious Pies (1339 H St. NW and 675 I St. NW). The recipe includes roasted chicken and vegetables in a light cream sauce. The shop also serves an Indian butter chicken pie on occasion and a Thanksgiving turkey pie during the holidays.
Downtown, Boss Shepherd’s (513 13th St. NW) serves up chicken pot pie fritters. While these poppable bites are a different take on the traditional preparation, they’re filled with all the standard ingredients and get an extra kick from sage sausage gravy.
The home-style menu at newcomer Olivia’s Diner (1120 19th St. NW) features an enormous turkey pot pie loaded with vegetables to keep stomachs warm and happy. It’s made with carrots, onions, peas, potatoes, leeks and mushrooms, all inside a puff pastry.
In addition to these spots, keep an eye out for the dish at your favorite local cafe or diner. It’s certainly that time of year.
Small Bites

The Taste of D.C. festival is happening this Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m to 7 p.m. It will be held on Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 7th Streets. General admission tickets are $20, and they include a voucher for a free beer, wine, or water along with a coupon for a free ShopHouse bowl. Once “inside” the event, individual food and drink tastings can be purchased for $8 or less, with plenty of affordable options.
Push your cocktail boundaries
The Royal (501 Florida Ave, NW) is launching a new craft cocktail series it’s calling Royal Knights. The special guest bartender events will be held each Monday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and focus on liquors and spirits that don’t often get in the spotlight. Swing by the first event on October 12 to taste American brandy from Copper & Kings distillery in Kentucky. There will be eight different brandy and absinthe cocktails available for $8 each.
A judgement-free pumpkin beer celebration
Anyone seeking kind company to indulge in a wide range of pumpkin beer should head to The Black Squirrel today for its annual Smashing Pumpkin Beer Fest. The event will feature 18 pumpkin brews from excellent brewers like Avery, Ballast Point, DC Brau, and many more. If that’s not enough, take part in the all-pumpkin food menu with dishes like pumpkin soup, pumpkin mac and cheese and—of course—pumpkin pie.
Margarita Mondays. Because why not.
Popular eatery Tico (1926 14th St. NW) is rolling out new Monday night drink specials. The happy hour menu will be available at the bar from 4 p.m. until last call at 11:30 p.m. Guests in the dining room or at the bar can also order one of three signature draft cocktails for $30 a pitcher until last call.
