Update:

Even President Obama felt compelled to weigh in:

If you really think about it though, it’s not all that surprising. While much has been made about what the film’s vision of the future got wrong, Old, Future Biff is remarkably similar to real-life Donald Trump: same general build and appearance, same demeanor, same desire to transform the American landscape into a wasteland of sleazy branded casinos, and even the same attitude towards women. We might not have hover boards, but Robert Zemeckis did a hell of a job predicting our future political landscape.

Original:
For those of you who somehow managed to miss it (which judging from the media frenzy this morning would mean that you’re in a persistent vegetative state), today is the day that Marty McFly arrives in the “future” in Back to the Future Part II. While events are happening all over the country to celebrate this auspicious day, the District is not to be outdone; we’ve got a truckload of enthusiasm (or maybe a DeLorean-load worth?), a ton of events, and the motivation to make it to at least one of these varied happenings. Buckle your seatbelts nerds, because where we’re going we don’t need roads.

For those looking to attend a screening, basically every theater in the surrounding area seems to have gotten into the time traveling spirit, including movie houses as far out as Tyson’s Corner. Below are some of the closer options. But no matter where you go, pay attention to the showtimes; oddly, almost every screening has a start time listed as either 4:29 or 5:00, meaning that the average hard working Washingtonian would need a time machine to be able to make it to the theater on schedule.

  • Regel Cinemas Gallery Place (5:00)
  • AMC Loews Georgetown (4:29)
  • AMC Mazza Gallerie (5:00)
  • Arclight Bethesda (4:29)

But you don’t have to actually go to a theater to be a part of the fun. With the temperature projected to hit 72 degrees today, consider wandering over to Columbia Heights. There is a pretty killer DIY arts installation at 11th and Irving Street NW.

Meanwhile, Fantom Comics in Dupont (2010 P Street NW) will be hosting a BttF-themed party starting at 6 p.m. and running until midnight. A $5 cover charge will get you access to the store and the party, featuring a costume contest, a best character impression contest, and several small trivia contests. Guests will be able to purchase plastic Biff Tanner Hotel and Casino cups for $5, which come with all-night $2 refills of “Biff Brew Shandy,” a drink made by Fantom’s in-house bartender. The comic shop will also be serving Flux Capacitor shooters (mind eraser shots) and a wide assortment of beer and wine starting at $4.50. Best of all, a DeLorean is currently parked outside of the comic shop and patrons can take photos while sitting in the passenger’s seat.

ACT: The App Association (1401 K Street NW, suite 501) will also be hosting their own BttF event from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. Reservations are free, and food and drink will be served in the form of Pepsi and “rehydrated pizza”.

Those living in Virginia and Maryland are also in luck. Reston has indeed temporarily changed its name to “Hill Valley” in honor of the film, and an engineer out at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt has gotten some attention with his sweet ride.

It’s a good day to be a time traveler.
