Upside-down D.C. flags are now the least of the D.C. Board of Elections’ worries.

Executive Director Clifford Tatum will depart from the organization at the end of 2015. Tatum has accepted a job with the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission, as first reported by WAMU. DCBOE announced Monday that it has opened up a national search for his replacement.

This independent agency is responsible for administering elections, registering voters, and providing ballot access.

Its board has three slots, two of which are filled by people whose terms have expired—Chair Deborah Nichols and Stephen Danzansky. The other membership remains open.

“It’s been a while, but we’re lucky to have them,” says Margarita Mikhaylova, DCBOE spokesperson. “It’s a lot of work being a board member.”

A DCBOE board member must be nominated by the mayor and confirmed by the D.C. Council.

Despite Tatum’s departure and the lack of current board members, Mikhaylova told DCist that DCBOE is on track for the 2016 elections. “We don’t have any concerns,” she says. “We have contingency plans.”
