When the elaborate can sculptures came down last year, more than 56,000 pounds of food came down with them. As a result, the Capital Area Food Bank received the equivalent of about 42,000 meals.
At this year’s edition of the ever-popular CANStruction, which is organized by the Washington Architectural Foundation, 24 teams took to the transportation theme with enthusiasm and whimsy, using tins of tuna, soup, and peaches as their building blocks at the build-out on Sunday. Among the finished creations are a nearly life-size Car2go, Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, and the Magic School Bus.
They’ll be on view until November 30, when the time comes for awards and the dismantling dis-can-tling (sorry, not sorry). Visitors can cast a vote for their favorite by donating a canned good any time throughout the week—though if you do so on 11/28, you’ll get $1 off admission to the museum—or by making an online donation.
The Washington Architectural Foundation is also particularly encouraging people to visit on Black Friday as “an alternative to the excesses of shopping on the day after Thanksgiving.”
