Mayor Muriel Bowser announced appointments to D.C.’s Board of Ethics and Government Accountability and Board of Elections yesterday.

This comes at a time when two of the three seats on the Board of Elections were filled with people whose terms had expired and the third was empty, less than a year before a presidential election. The Mayor reappointed Stephen Danzansky, whose term recently ended. If confirmed, he would be joined by appointees Dionna Lewis, an associate at the D.C. office for labor and employment, and Andrew Richardson, former general counsel in the Fenty administration.

The Board of Elections is still on the hunt to fill its Executive Director position that’s been up for grabs since last month. A nationwide search is underway.

An independent agency of the D.C. government, the BOE oversees elections, ballot access, and voter registration.

Carol Schwartz was appointed to the Board of Ethics and Government Accountability, which investigates alleged ethics laws violations by D.C. government employees and public officials. The agency also gives ethical advice and conducts trainings on the D.C. government’s code of conduct.

Schwartz served more 16 years on the D.C. Council and ran for mayor five times, including as an independent in the 2014 race. In 1994, she scored 42 percent of the vote against Marion Barry.

Perhaps most notably, Schwartz has a dog with her namesake. Carol the dog was put up for adoption earlier this year. At the time, the dog’s Facebook page had 3,581 fans—more than three times as many as the real Carol Schwartz.

Each appointment must now be confirmed by the D.C. Council.
