Sharon Jones performs at the Lincoln Theatre tomorrow night with The Dap Kings.
MONDAY
Car Seat Headrest, Ne-Hi, The Duskwhales @ DC9 8 p.m. $12. All ages, inaccessible venue.
Will Toledo has been putting out music on Bandcamp since 2010, with a discography that spans eleven releases of lo-fi guitar power-pop. While Car Seat Headrest has had a modest following through the years, Toledo got his break this year when an intern at Matador Records brought CSH’s music to the attention of the label boss who, after seeing the band live, signed them to the label. Out of the bedroom and into the studio, CSH re-recorded tracks from the past to make up the debut album. Teen of Style was released this October as an appetizer for an all new CSH record out next year, Teens of Denial. CSH trades in early 90’s indie rock, like Guided By Voices, mixed with Spoon’s studio trickery and Pavement’s slacker lyrics, making it a band to watch in 2016.
>>Café Saint Ex: Gun Outfit, Flasher, Broken Grids 9 p.m. $8. All ages, inaccessible venue.
TUESDAY
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings @ Lincoln Theatre 6:30 P.M. $40. All ages, accessible venue.
Soul singer Sharon Jones is an amazing performer with a knockout voice, but things have not always been gravy. In 2013 the singer was diagnosed with cancer, forcing her to cancel shows and hold back her and her band The Dap-Kings’ fifth record. The cancer went into remission, allowing Jones to play once again. This time was documented in a movie Miss Sharon Jones!, which premiered this year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Though the cancer did return, after another round of chemotherapy the singer is healthy and ready to take on stages this holiday season with the release of the band’s first seasonal album It’s A Holiday Soul Party. Get into the Christmas mood with Jones as she plays tracks from her wide discography as well as songs from her latest release.

THURSDAY
Ex Hex, Mac McCaughan + The Non Believers, and Ed Schrader’s Music Beat @ 9:30 Club 7 p.m. $18. All ages, accessible venue.
What more can be said about D.C. power-pop trio Ex Hex? Since releasing their debut last year, the band has toured far and wide—playing small stages and festivals alike. The band has played a lot of places in D.C. but this is their first time headlining on the 9:30 Stage (the band previously opened for the Hives in 2013). With them is Mac McCaughn, their label boss at Merge Records and the front man of Superchunk performing with his new band The Non Believers; and Baltimore’s Ed Schrader’s Music Beat. This is a solid three band bill not to be missed.
Joanna Newsom and Alela Diane & Ryan Francesconi @ Lincoln Theatre 6:30 p.m. Sold-Out. All ages, accessible venue.
Joanna Newsom takes her time between records. Though there was only two years from her debut and sophomore records, it was four between the magical Y’s and 2010’s Have One On Me. It’s been another five years of waiting for Newsom’s fourth record Divers. The years of waiting doesn’t make Newsom a slouch either, as Have One On Me was an impressive three-disc collection clocking in over two hours. It is always welcome for Newsom to return with a record, as it ensures she will bring her wonderful songs on the road. Divers is Newsom’s most accessible record by a mile, ditching any concept or pretense. It is also Newsom’s shortest record, if only by a minute or two. The arrangements add more instruments in but keep room for Newsom’s harp and angelic vocals. Live, it will be a treat to hear.
FRIDAY
Soft Pink Truth, Party Poison, and DJ Dad Weed @ Metro Gallery 9 P.M. $8. 18+, accessible venue.
Baltimore’s Soft Pink Truth is the electronic music prankster we all need and deserve. Helmed by Drew Daniel, who is also one half of Matmos, Soft Pink Truth has been releasing collage cut-ups since 2003. Last year’s Why Do The Heathen Rage? was a collection of black metal . Instead it was an academic study of masculinity and queerness. Last week Daniel surprises by releasing the band’s fourth record, Why Pay More?, an album made up of tracks that have been kicking around since 2007 and made up of samples from YouTube video searches. Live Soft Pink Truth brings the party and, though this show is all the way in Baltimore, it is totally worth the drive.
>>The Pinch: Sidecar Conspiracy, Red Sword, Stop Worrying & Love the Bomb, Big Black Wolves, and Tired All the Time 6:30 P.M. $10. All ages, inaccessible venue.
SATURDAY
Shy Glizzy @ The Howard Theatre 11:30 P.M. $42.50 – $60. 21+, accessible venue.
DMV rapper Shy Glizzy has been courting national attention since landing himself a spot in the XXL magazine Freshman Class this year. The rapper has gained a steady fan base here in DC and is posed to be the first local rapper to pop off since Wale. The Young Jefe has been stead releasing mix tapes, including three this year: Be Careful, For Trappers Only and Peace & Blessings. Glizzy has been getting steadily better as a rapper as time goes on, so what better time to see him than his birthday bash at the Howard Theatre?
SUNDAY
The Get Up Kids, Into It. Over It., Rozwell Kid @ Black Cat 7:30 P.M. Sold-Out. All ages, accessible venue.
Who would’ve thought the Get Up Kids would still be a band twenty years later? Formed in 1995, the band went on to define the emo genre with Four Minute Mile and Something to Write Home About before calling it quits in 2005. In 2008 the band returned to celebrate the ten year anniversary of Something to Write Home About and never stopped from there. Now they;re celebrating the big 2-0 at Black Cat with two younger bands: Into It. Over It., and Rozwell Kid, who are part of the “emo-revival” and owe so much The Get Up Kids.
>>Fillmore Silver Spring: Mac Miller, Earth Gang, Michael Christmas, and Remember 7:30 P.M. Sold-Out. All ages, accessible venue.
