This Thursday, a hundred lucky D.C. youth will take to the aisles of Walmart with $100 gift cards in tow. The holiday shopping spree is guided by—no other than—D.C. Police.

Instead of policing kids from unlawful acts, MPD officers will shop with children and help them choose gifts for family members. This is part of the annual Shop With A Cop day that’s taken place for several years, according to Lieutenant Sean Conboy.

The children, who range from ages 5 to 17, were referred to participate by outreach programs and “have been identified as in-need,” Conboy says. Because of these programs, many of the youth have ongoing relationships with the cops, he continues.

The youth and officers will be paired at Faith Moravian Church then travel to Walmart’s Fort Totten store.

“This is a great opportunity to give back to those children in our community and provide a merry Christmas,” Conboy says.

The event is made possible through a $10,000 grant from Walmart to the DC Police Foundation, which sponsors other programs such as Beat the Streets, the Youth Advisory Council, and the Junior Police Academy.

Last month, MDP rolled out another plan for community engagement with its first-ever community bike ride, amid a debate about the mayor’s plan to increase police presence on the streets. Police officers have also been frequently captured dancing.
