Former Mayor Vince Gray is officially off the hook.
According to a release, U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips said he would not file more charges in the investigation of corrupt spending in Gray’s winning 2010 mayoral campaign.
Phillips writes in part that, “admissible evidence is likely insufficient to obtain and sustain a criminal conviction against any other individuals related to the federal and local political campaigns.”
Gray has maintained his innocence throughout the case, rejecting a plea deal in September 2014 for a single felony count. Meanwhile, twelve people have already pleaded guilty and been charged in association with the investigation, including businessman Jeffrey Thompson, who admitted to funding a $653,000 “shadow” campaign.
According to City Paper’s Vince Gray Investigation Clock, Gray was under investigation for 1,739 days.
Gray’s attorney Robert Bennett told City Paper that, “Mayor Gray never did anything wrong, so this is the right decision. He can now get on with his personal and professional life.”
In a statement, Gray said, “Justice delayed is justice denied, but I cannot change history. I look forward to getting on with the next chapter of my life, which will no doubt be dedicated to service.”
