The windows of Halal Kabob House in Adams Morgan were smashed overnight, and a register machine with about $150 in cash was stolen.
“We closed at 11 o’clock last night and we got a call at home this morning to tell us what happened,” says Asma Ashraf, whose father Ali owns the 18th Street NW restaurant. “We were like, ‘Oh my God,’ and ran over here, and saw the glass broken in a thousand pieces.”
D.C. police confirm they received a call shortly before 8 a.m. this morning, dispatched as burglary two and destruction of property, says Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Karimah Bilal.
Ashraf says that the register machine was found at a nearby school, “broken in a hundred pieces. We found some pennies, some quarters, just coins. All the cash was gone.”
The windows are currently getting replaced, which will cost about $700, says Ashraf. Halal Kabob also purchased a new register.
This is the first time the restaurant has been robbed in its two-and-a-half years of operation; it is unclear if the incident had to do with increased anti-Muslim sentiment. Police said they are still investigating and declined to provide any additional details.
Hate crimes against Muslim Americans and mosques have tripled in the United States since the Paris attacks. In the past week and a half in D.C., there’s been an evacuation from the Council on American-Islamic Relations after receiving a suspicious substance in the mail and a “Quran Roast” outside of the White House.
“We’ll try to open tonight,” Ashraf says.
