Without actually saying their name, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced today that she is betting on the Washington Football Team in a friendly wager with the mayor of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

If Bowser’s “home team” wins, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt will have to send over some Cannery Public Market cheese curds and wear a Washington Football Team t-shirt at a service event. Washington’s mayor also promised some light trash talk.

“My home team has been on a roll lately, and I look forward to cheering them on to victory against Green Bay,” Bowser said in a release. “And when they do win, I look forward to enjoying some of that fine Wisconsin cheese while saying: You like that!”

But if the Packers take it, Bowser will send over a half-smoke, and don one of their (conveniently green) shirts at a mentoring event.

“I’m delighted to showcase our world famous cheese curds in this friendly wager,”Schmitt said. “After we smoke Washington, the people of Green Bay will dine on the half smokes sausages offered up by Mayor Bowser.”

The mayor has gone back-and-forth on using the name, particularly amid reports that she was saying it publicly in an effort to curry favor with Dan Snyder and lure the team back to the District. But in multiple interviews, Bowser has called it offensive and said it should be changed.

From The Post:

Reporter: Why do you think the name should be changed?

Bowser: It’s offensive to many people.

Reporter: Then why do you continue to use it?

Bowser: I don’t.

Reporter: You just did

Bowser: I may have slipped and used it.

The National Park Service owns the land under RFK, and the Department of the Interior has said they won’t allow the team back unless they ditch the name. Nearby residents have also expressed strong opposition to a new NFL stadium on the site.

Meanwhile, activists are urging CBS to refrain from using the name should they somehow make it to the Super Bowl.

“Our point was that we wanted to be on the record now,” Change the Mascot spokesperson Joel Barkin told DCist. “Since we began our campaign, the team never even smelled the playoffs, let alone made it to the playoffs.”

The team has played at FedExField in Landover, Maryland since 1997, and will face off against the Packers there at 4:40 p.m. this Sunday.
