On the one-year anniversary of the deadly smoke incident at L’Enfant Plaza tomorrow morning, injured victims will jointly file more than 80 lawsuits against WMATA.

When a number of train cars on L’Enfant Plaza’s Green and Yellow line filled with smoke, it resulted in the death of one woman and the hospitalization of more than 60 other riders on January 12, 2015. Metro has since announced new safety measures in response, but those involved in the forthcoming suits want to see more action.

A statement from law firms Cogen & Cohen and Ashcraft & Gerel says they want to see three different results from the lawsuits:

1) To obtain answers for the injured victims and public at large to questions such as what was in the smoke and what caused the incident in the first place;

2) To make Metro a safer public transportation system; and

3) Where appropriate, to obtain compensation for those who suffered injuries.

The family of Carol Glover, the 61-year-old grandmother who died as a result of the incident, already filed a suit against WMATA last January, as have more than 60 other passengers on the affected trains.
