Monday
Metz, Bully, So Pitted @ Rock and Roll Hotel. 7 p.m. $16. All ages accessible venue.
Toronto’s Metz makes loud sludgy noise rock that blows out ear drums. Nashville’s Bully reinterprets 90’s grunge for modern times. Seattle’s So Pitted is the mix of both Metz’s intense fury and Bully’s grunge tendencies, taking influence from hardcore and the Jesus Lizard. This three-band bill is the first great show of 2016 and is not to be missed!

Thursday
Heavy Breathing, The Effects, Puff Pieces @ Black Cat 7:30 p.m. $10. All ages accessible venue.
Thursday night’s Black Cat show is made up of three bands with ties to the D.C. scene going back to the late nineties. Former Apes members make up the psychedelic dance band Heavy Breathing, still one of D.C.’s most reliable bands. The Effects are feature former members of Faraquet and Deleted Scenes. Puff Pieces is formed by ex-Antelope members. All three have been forging their own paths since creating new bands and changing the D.C. music landscape as they go.
Friday
The Max Levine Ensemble, Two-Inch Astronaut, Lackluster, Isn’t It Always?, Jank @ American University. 8 p.m. $7. All ages accessible venue.
The Max Levine Ensemble just released its first full length since 2008 last year. After hiding it in the Black Cat jukebox for month, the record Backlash Baby was set free and confirmed that the long time pop-punkers are here to stay. Local favorites Two-Inch Astronaut released their latest record in 2014 but have a new one, Personal Life, out in February. Just those two bands along would be a great bill, but with Lackluster, Isn’t It Always? and Jank, the bill is all the sweeter.
>>Comet Ping Pong: the Casual Dots, Governess, Sneaks. 10 p.m. $12. All ages accessible venue.
Saturday
Cinema Hearts, Walkabout, and Young Scum @ Comet Ping Pong. 10 p.m. $12. All ages accesible venue.
Fairfax’s Cinema Hearts are a bedroom pop three piece who take lo-fi jangle rock and combines it with girl group soul. The band started as the solo project of singer Caroline Weinroth, but now includes members Erich Weinroth, and James Adelsberger. The crew released one EP back in September of 2014, but are sure to break out new tunes set for release this year at the show with Saturday night. With Fairfax residents Walkabout and Richmond’s Young Scum, the show is a great primer for the sound of Virginia bands in 2016.
