In honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., the District will be bustling with events over the next few days. While many employees across the country don’t have to work on Monday, the holiday has been dubbed a “day on” rather than a day off, with opportunities to serve.

Reflect with IMPACT, The Memorial Foundation, Faith and Politics Institute, and the Asian American Lead School at the MLK Memorial. A wreath will be laid at the memorial after words from FBI Director James Comey, and others. 9-10 a.m.
Help clean the Anacostia River by removing trash and debris from the shoreline at Anacostia Park (1500 Anacostia Drive SE). Free lunch and T-shirts provided to volunteers. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Donate canned goods and money, or volunteer to help 5th graders fight food insecurity at Thomson Elementary School (1200 L Street NW). 10 a.m.
Help under-resourced women with selecting donated clothing or building job skills at Park Road Community Church (1019 Park Rd NW) 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
March with Mayor Muriel Bowser in the annual MLK Day Parade starting from St. Elizabeths Hospital (2700 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE). 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Listen to excerpts from speeches and poems reflecting on the Black American experience, performed by actor David Mills at the Folger Shakespeare Library (201 East Capitol Street, SE). 11 a.m.
Volunteer to teach students, and more, at Aspire! Afterschool Learning’s literacy day. Students will learn about 25 different countries by reading, analyzing, and, engaging in conversations at Arlington Presbyterian Church (3507 Columbia Pike Arlington, Va.) 2-5:30 p.m.
